Dengue Fever
Traveler's Guide
Sri Lanka is a beautiful tropical paradise, but like many warm, humid destinations in South Asia, it is home to mosquitoes. While malaria has been completely eradicated here for years, Dengue Fever is still present and is something every traveler should be aware of.
If you develop a sudden fever during your trip, here is a simple guide on how to recognize Dengue, manage the symptoms safely, and know when to seek medical care.
What is Dengue Fever?
Dengue is a viral infection transmitted through the bite of an infected Aedes mosquito. These mosquitoes are easily recognized by the black and white stripes on their legs. Unlike regular mosquitoes that bite at night, the Dengue carrying mosquito is most active during the day, especially early in the morning and right before sunset.
Key Symptoms to Watch For
Dengue symptoms usually appear 4 to 10 days after being bitten. It is often called "breakbone fever" because of the severe muscle and joint aches it causes. Common symptoms include:
- A sudden, very high fever (often reaching 104°F / 40°C).
- Severe headache, especially pain right behind the eyes.
- Intense joint and muscle pain.
- Feeling completely exhausted, nauseous, or vomiting.
- A faint, red skin rash that appears a few days after the fever starts.
Crucial Medical Warning: Avoid Ibuprofen or Aspirin
If you suspect you have Dengue, do not take Ibuprofen, Aspirin, or Nurofen to lower your fever. Dengue can temporarily lower your blood platelet count, making your blood thinner. Medications like Ibuprofen increase the risk of internal bleeding. Only use Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) to manage the fever and pain, stay in bed, and drink plenty of fluids like coconut water or ORS (Oral Rehydration Salts) to avoid dehydration.
When to See a Doctor
If your fever lasts for more than 48 hours, or if you feel extremely weak, you should visit a doctor for a simple, quick blood test (called a Full Blood Count). This test checks your platelet levels and confirms if it is Dengue so a medical professional can monitor your recovery safely.
