Water Safety
Traveler's Guide
When traveling to a tropical destination, understanding the local water safety rules is the best way to prevent a severe case of "traveler's belly."
If you are wondering whether you can drink the tap water in Sri Lanka, brush your teeth with it, or safely enjoy ice in your drinks, here is a straightforward guide to staying fully hydrated and healthy throughout your trip.
The Golden Rule: Avoid Untreated Tap Water
As a general rule, international travelers should not drink untreated tap water in Sri Lanka.
While municipal water in major cities like Colombo is treated, the aging pipe infrastructure and storage tanks across the country can introduce contaminants before the water reaches the tap. In rural areas and coastal surf towns, tap water often comes from local wells, which contain mineral profiles and microflora that Western stomachs are simply not accustomed to.
To stay safe, follow these simple habits:
- Drink Bottled Water: Stick to sealed, commercially bottled water. It is highly affordable and available in every small grocery boutique (kade) across the island. Look for bottles with an intact plastic seal around the cap.
- Brushing Your Teeth: It is generally safe to rinse your mouth with tap water after brushing in reputable hotels. However, if you have a highly sensitive stomach or are staying in a remote eco lodge, use bottled water to be completely safe.
- Be Mindful in the Shower: Keep your mouth closed while showering to avoid accidentally swallowing untreated water.
What About Ice and Fresh Salads?
- Ice is Generally Safe: Most tourist restaurants, beach bars, and hotels buy commercial ice made from purified water. These ice cubes are easily recognizable because they are machine made and usually have a hole through the center. You do not need to avoid iced coffees or cocktails in established tourist spots.
- Fresh Juices and Salads: In standard hotels and tourist oriented cafes, vegetables and fruits are washed in filtered water. If you are eating at a highly rustic, local roadside stall, prefer cooked foods that are served steaming hot.
Nature's Perfect Hydrator: King Coconut (Thambili)
If you are out exploring and run out of bottled water, look for Sri Lanka's famous King Coconut (Thambili). These bright orange coconuts are sold on almost every roadside. The vendor will chop the top off right in front of you. Because the water inside is naturally sealed within the nut, it is 100% sterile, completely safe, and packed with natural electrolytes—making it the ultimate natural defense against tropical heat exhaustion.
What to Do If You Accidentally Drink Tap Water
If you accidentally swallow tap water or suspect a drink made you sick, watch for symptoms like sudden stomach cramps, nausea, watery diarrhea, or a mild fever.
Most minor cases resolve within 24 to 48 hours with rest and heavy hydration using Oral Rehydration Salts (ORS). However, if you cannot keep fluids down or develop a high fever, you should see a medical professional right away.
